Zhang Liang Malatang

Our culinary concept draws inspiration from the captivating landscape of Sichuan, China, the birthplace of Malatang. Our objective is to immerse customers in an extraordinary dining experience that captures the essence of this unique food culture, mirroring the beauty of nature.

Malatang traces its origins to the banks of the Yangtze River in Sichuan. In ancient times, the boating industry thrived along these waters, and many individuals earned their livelihood by towing boats. The challenging working conditions, characterised by damp and foggy weather, often left boat trackers feeling unwell. To combat these discomforts, they concocted a remedy by cooking herbs in a hotpot, infusing Sichuan pepper and ginger to dispel dampness. This gave rise to Malatang. Recognising its potential, vendors seized the business opportunity and propagated the culinary delight throughout China.

Our proposal seeks to encapsulate this narrative through a distinctive design—an upside-down staggering louvre ceiling. This architectural feature mimics the undulating landscapes of rolling mountains, offering patrons a mesmerising view reminiscent of valleys and rivers. The intention is to transport diners into the heart of Sichuan's natural beauty, creating a harmonious fusion between our culinary offerings and the enchanting landscapes that inspired them.
