The Long March Bridge

Our inspiration has come from cross-breeding the typologies of local archetypal house, arch bridge and bridge-complex such as the wind-rain bridge (风雨桥). The resulting form is a flying roof emerging from the southern bank wetland waving over the river forming a ‘Linjiang building’ on the northern bank, a simplified typology of ‘house’ immersed into the old urban city fabric. This has created a poetic scene of mirage, ‘a chain of mountains’ floating on the river, instantly recognizable as a new image for the city echoing the surrounding mountains. The pitched-roof can be accessed by the dare-climbers, offering a spectacular panoramic view of the city. It resonates the Long March which was undertaken by the Red Army of the Communist Party of China.
